Our history in billiards dates back to the late 1940s, which is nothing in comparison to the rich history of billiards dating back over 400 years ago. And while our history doesn’t date that far back, there’s still a richness about our humble beginnings in billiards that justly deem us as billiard experts.
A Brief Summary of the Gilchrist Family’s Billiard History
Ray Gilchrist got his start in the billiard business back in the late 1940s at the Saunier Wilhelm plant in Alabama. That’s where he learned everything about pool tables. By the time the 1950s came along, he moved to Nashville, TN where he worked a typical day job, but pursued his billiard endeavors on nights and weekends traveling from town to town to recover used pool tables, thus, the start of Ray’s Billiard Supply.
A few years after the birth of Ray’s Billiard Supply, he opened a pool room in West Nashville and sold pool tables there. Over the next 30 years, he actually moved his showroom to a few places around Nashville until he bought the Steepleton store. The showroom has been there ever since.
And just FYI, all the knowledge Ray gained in billiards throughout the years, he imparted upon us as well, and we were quite eager to learn and help out. So naturally, after Ray retired, we couldn’t be happier to keep the family business going. But in taking over the business, we did decide to change the name to Nashville Billiard & Patio, in the early 90s.
Now our personal favorites are the antique tables, but our passion runs deep for all our billiard tables, of course. We know billiards like the back of our hands! Any questions you have, we know the answer, and if for some strange reason we don’t know the answer, we can find it out for you in the blink of an eye.

We’re definitely not a business that expects everyone to make a purchase every visit. Our tables are so exquisite in design and craftsmanship that honestly, people like to come and look at the tables in amazement.
